The last spike is hammered in on the Northern Pacific Railroad's cross-country line; shortly after, a push begins to expel the Asians who built much of the line. Despite huge subsidies and land grants to railroads to build the transcontinental railroad, the quality was so poor that much of the original line would be abandoned.
1883
Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotake), main chief of the Lakota tribes, delivers a speech, at the celebration of the driving of the last spike in the transcontinental railroad system, to great applause. He delivers the speech in his Sioux language, departing from a speech originally prepared by an army translator. Denouncing the US government, settlers, and army, the listeners thought he was welcoming and praising them. While giving the speech, Sitting Bull paused for applause periodically, bowed, smiled, and continued insulting his audience as the translator delivered the original address.

Progressive Louisiana Governor Huey Long is assassinated in Baton Rouge, LA.
1979
Actress Jean Seberg is found dead in her car, in an apparent suicide, she had been the victim of continuing harassment by the FBI over the years for her progressive politics - especially her support for the Black Panthers.
